Self-Defense Notes

Based on my written notes and lesson list from: Self-Defense and Self-Defense Lessons.

Core Principles
  • Awareness & surroundings: notice exits, spacing, and early danger signs.
  • Tapping & safety: in training, protect yourself and partners – tap early, tap clearly.
  • Distance & framing: either be well out of range or tight with strong frames.
  • Technical stand-up: protect yourself with frames and kicks, then stand up facing the threat.
Common Situations & Responses
  • Grabs from behind:
Break the grip, drop weight, turn into them. Options: take the back, arm drag, or T-Kimura-style control.
  • Standing chokes / head control:
Hand fight first, protect the neck, then turn, duck under, or use the wall to attack fingers and posture.
  • Attacker between your legs (guard situation):
Use frames on shoulders / hips, shrimp to make space, kick to create distance, and stand up with technical base.
  • Mount (attacker on top):
Trap & roll as default; when punches come, use punch-block ideas first, then bridge and escape.
